Optical biometry

Precise measurements for your cataract surgery plan.

Optical biometry measures dimensions of the eye. Your surgeon uses these measurements to help calculate the power of the replacement lens for cataract surgery.

Your branch, schedule, and preparation will be confirmed by our team.

Is this for you?

When might your doctor recommend it?

  • You are being assessed for cataract surgery.
  • Your surgeon has requested measurements for lens selection.
  • Your care team needs updated measurements before a planned procedure.

Not sure which test you need? Start with an eye consultation. A test is selected to answer a clinical question; it is not automatically needed for every patient.

What to expect

Three steps, with guidance along the way.

01

Get ready

Bring your current glasses and tell the team if you wear contact lenses. Ask in advance whether you need to stop wearing them before measurements.

02

Have the test

Sit at the instrument, rest your head on its supports, and look at the target while measurements are recorded.

03

Understand the next step

Ask when your results will be reviewed, who will explain them, and whether another appointment is needed. Bring your questions to that discussion.

The test, explained

About your test.

What it is. Optical biometry measures the size and shape of your eye to help plan cataract surgery. Your surgeon uses measurements such as eye length and corneal curvature to calculate a suitable power for the replacement lens. These measurements form part of a wider assessment of your eye health and vision goals.

How it works. The instrument uses light to measure distances within the eye and the curve of its front surface. You look at a target while keeping your head steady on the supports. Optical measurements generally do not require contact with the eye; the team will explain if an alternative measurement method is needed.

How to prepare. Bring your glasses and tell the clinic in advance if you wear contact lenses, because they can affect the shape of the cornea. Ask how long to leave them out before your measurements; the advice depends on your lenses and the assessment. Follow the clinic’s individual instructions and bring relevant eye records.

Your questions, answered

A little clarity before you come in.

Does this test hurt?

Optical measurements generally do not involve touching the eye. Your team will explain if another method is needed.

How long should I allow for my appointment?

The full visit may include registration, preparation, the test, and review. Ask your branch for the expected total time and whether results will be discussed that day.

Do I need a referral?

Tell our team whether another doctor requested the test, and bring the request and previous results. If you have not been assessed, ask whether a consultation is needed before booking.

How much does it cost, and can I use insurance?

Ask for the current test price and whether consultation or other fees are separate. Give the clinic your provider and plan details so participation, authorization, and any patient share can be checked.

Does this guarantee that I will not need glasses?

No. Lens choice, eye health, and other factors affect your result. Discuss your expectations and possible need for glasses with your surgeon.
