About your care.
What it is. Diabetic eye care checks for and manages eye changes associated with diabetes, including damage to the small blood vessels in the retina. Changes may be present before your vision feels different. Your eye-care plan depends on the findings and should be coordinated with the clinician managing your diabetes. How it works. A dilated retinal examination allows your doctor to look at the back of your eye. Fundus photographs or OCT scans may be recommended to document changes or assess retinal swelling. The results help your doctor decide whether monitoring, treatment, or referral is needed, and when your next eye review should take place.
How to prepare. Bring your medicine list, previous eye results, and any recent diabetes records that you already have. Tell the team about changes in vision and current treatment. Ask whether dilation is planned, bring sunglasses, and arrange a ride home if drops will be used. Do not change diabetes medicines or meals unless your treating clinician gives instructions.

Do I need an eye check if my vision is clear?
Yes, diabetes-related retinal changes can start without symptoms. Ask your doctor about the screening schedule appropriate for you.
Will I need laser treatment?
Not everyone does. Treatment depends on the examination and the stage of any retinal changes.
Does an eye visit replace my diabetes check-up?
No. Continue diabetes care with your treating clinician. Eye care is another part of protecting your health.
Will I be able to drive afterward?
Dilating drops may temporarily blur your vision. Ask the clinic about arranging someone to accompany you home.
