Pterygium care

Understand the growth. Discuss your next step.

Your visit, explained

About your care.

What it is. Pterygium care assesses a fleshy growth that extends from the tissue over the white of the eye towards the cornea. It may cause irritation, redness, or changes in vision. Your doctor checks its size and effect on the eye, then discusses whether observation, symptom relief, or surgical removal is appropriate.

How it works. A slit-lamp microscope provides a magnified view of the growth and the eye surface, while vision testing helps assess its effect. Lubricating drops may ease irritation but do not remove the growth. When surgery is appropriate, the surgeon removes it and may use a small tissue graft to reduce the chance of recurrence.

How to prepare. Bring your glasses, current drops, and any previous eye records, and note whether the growth or your vision has changed. Tell the doctor about medicines, allergies, and earlier eye surgery. If an operation is planned, ask for the specific preparation and recovery instructions, including arrangements for transport and follow-up.

YOUR FIRST STEP

Understand whether to monitor, manage, or treat.

A consultation is a chance to understand your eyes and talk through your choices.

01

Find out what it is

Have the growth examined rather than trying to identify it from a photo.

02

Discuss comfort and vision

Explain the irritation and any changes in how you see.

03

Know when surgery is considered

Ask about suitable options, expected benefits, risks, and follow-up.

Sound familiar?

Get advice that is based on your eye.

  • You have noticed a raised growth on the white of your eye.
  • The area often feels irritated or looks red.
  • You are concerned that the growth is changing or affecting your vision.

These concerns can have more than one cause. An examination helps identify the right next step.

THE CARE CONVERSATION

What could your care involve?

A pterygium is a tissue growth that can extend onto the cornea. Your doctor assesses its size, irritation, and effect on vision. Care may involve monitoring, symptom relief, or surgery when appropriate.

Before you book

A few questions you may have.

Does every pterygium need surgery?

No. Your doctor may recommend monitoring or symptom management. Surgery may be considered based on symptoms, growth, and its effect on vision.

Can it come back after surgery?

Recurrence is possible. Ask your surgeon about the approach, risks, and follow-up plan for your eye.

Is a photo enough to decide on treatment?

A photo cannot replace a full eye examination. Book an assessment so the doctor can evaluate the growth and your vision.

What will the procedure cost?

The estimate depends on the assessment and recommended care. Ask the team for a written breakdown before scheduling treatment.
