An eye appointment is a chance to talk about how you see and what matters in your day. A few notes can give that conversation a useful starting point.
Start with what matters to you
Write down your main questions before the visit. You might want to understand a test, compare care options, or talk about a change you have noticed. Tell the doctor which concern is most important to you. If a medical word is unfamiliar, ask for a plain-language explanation. 1
Everyday examples can help you start the conversation: a road sign that is harder to read, a hobby that has become difficult, or a question about your current glasses. The planner gives you space to organize topics; it cannot tell you what is causing a vision change.
Know what an eye exam can include
An eye exam can check more than how clearly you read an eye chart. Depending on your needs, it may include checks of side vision, eye movement and eye pressure. Dilating drops widen the pupils so the doctor can look more closely inside the eyes. Ask which checks are planned for your visit and what they can show. 2
Leave with a clear next step
Take notes, or bring someone you trust to help you remember the discussion. Before leaving, check that you understand the plan and when to return. You can ask for written instructions. If your pupils will be dilated, ask about the journey home: the drops can temporarily blur vision and make light feel brighter. 1 2
